Montaccio - 2024
Montaccio, a hamlet in Bergell at 1,043 metres above sea level, lies west of Stampa on a sunny south-facing slope. The house ensemble is situated at the edge of the village, directly on the access road from Stampa to the village centre. Its pres- ence creates a distinctive landmark within the built environment, shaping the silhouette of the village.
The original residential house from 1719 was in need of extensive renovation. Therefore, the goal was not to maximally preserve the his- torical substance, but rather to selectively use and integrate the still intact components and supple- ment them with new elements. Old and new were not staged as opposites, but as a harmonious co- existence – an attitude that has shaped construction in Bergell for centuries. A material combination emerged that reflects the dialogue between tradition and modernity: the lime plaster on the rubble stone masonry is supplemented by exposed concrete for the new structural elements. Old wooden cladding found new use as floor and wall coverings, and the original roof beams were partially reprocessed for the production of window and door frames. The new building components are characterised by timeless simplicity and ideally complement the historical substance.
To preserve the character of the building, its tactile quality and the authenticity of the village entrance, the centuries-old façade plaster was not removed, but merely cleaned, patched, restored and extended. The original stable was converted into a guesthouse, connected to the main house by an underground passage.
