Montaccio - 2024
Montaccio is a small hamlet at 1,043 meters above sea level in the Bergell region, located west of the village of Stampa on a south-facing slope with views toward Italy. The residence is situated on the edge of the village, directly alongside the access road that leads from Stampa to the village center.
The building, composed of two connected sections, strongly defines the village silhouette. Built in 1719, the residence was in a very poor state. Thus, the goal was to preserve as much historical substance as possible;therefore, what was usable was repurposed and new elements were added where needed. Old and new were staged in contrast to clearly state was has been renovated and what not. The final result though is a house with interwoven elements—a philosophy that has shaped building practices in Bergell for centuries.
This approach led to a combination of materials: rough stone masonry with lime plaster is complemented by exposed concrete for the new structural elements.
The old timber cladding was reused as floorboards or as wall cladding and some of the old roof beams were reused to make the windows and door frames. All the materials are combined without losing their individuality. The newly installed components have a timeless character and complement the historic building fabric perfectly. In order not to destroy the soul of the house, the century-old facades were only patched up and the character of the village entrance was preserved.
