Vicosoprano - 2012
In 2012, a detached house for a family of four was built in the mountain village of Vicosoprano in Bergell. The building is located on the edge of the town on a steep lot close to the forest. There is an overall heterogeneity in the way the buildings in Vicosoprano are constructed, without a predominant trend. Despite all the different styles in the immediate neighbourhood, the construction of the studio does deliberately not attempt to establish a dialogue. Instead, the focus lies on a harmonious orientation towards nature.
From the street, the three-story building with its cubature looks like an irregularly shaped monolith, which extends only slightly above the street level on the northeastern side and opens to a spacious outdoor space on the southern side. It is not just the shape of the house that establishes a link to the surrounding landscape, but also the materials used and the final effect recalls the harshness as well as the simplicity of the mountain scenery. All the construction details of this project are reduced to the bare minimum, without unnecessary ornaments in order not to interfere with the idea of a monolith.
Inside, the space is divided as a natural sequence of the individual functional areas. All the secondary functions and the entrance area are located on the northeastern side, while the southwestern side of the ground floor houses the living, dining and cooking area. The upper levels accommodate the private areas.
