Competition 1st place
Academia Engiadina, a regional secondary school and the third largest in the canton of Grisons, encompasses a pre-university secondary school (Gymnasium), a business college and a vocational school. The Höhere Fachschule für Tourismus Graubünden (Higher Technical College for Grisons Tourism) is also located on the campus.
The aim of the extension was to consolidate the entire secondary school into a single building. Instead of demolishing the two existing buildings and replacing them with a new construction, it was decided to restructure the two school buildings and connect them into a coherent unit through an extension with an additional storey. The distinction between old and new remains visible in both the structure and the choice of materials, both internally and externally. This is particularly evident on the façade facing Via Quadratscha: here, the villa from 1875, designed by master builder Jakob Ragaz with geometric sgraffito on a red background, is framed by two modern wings of exposed concrete, making it stand out as the central building of the secondary school.
