Founded in 1904, the Lyceum Alpinum is an international boarding school with 220 boarding students and 120 day students. The school's philosophy conveys values that strike a balance between tradition and progressive thinking.
The school campus, located on a hillside, is characterised by the striking buildings of architects Karl Gottlieb Koller and Nikolaus Hartmann, erected between 1904 and 1914. From the 1950s onwards, the campus experienced successive expansion in a westerly direction. The oldest part of the campus rests on a massive natural stone plinth and forms a courtyard with a circular forecourt, the Rondell, where the main access is located. This is accessible from the village to the west. The planned expansion of the campus to the east aligns with Nikolaus Hartmann’s original expansion intentions from 1928.
The new building, with a two-storey natural stone plinth and a boarding house wing, was positioned slightly set back from the rector’s building to preserve its superior position. An intermediate space is created between the new girls’ boarding house and the rector’s building, providing the new dining hall with a generous terrace and an unobstructed view down the valley. This extension harmoniously integrates into the existing campus structure and contributes to the architectural and functional development of the Lyceum.
