Maloja - 2015
The Maloja ski area includes a surface lift, a snow tubing facility and a rope tow lift, which, with a length of 203 metres and a height difference of only 36 metres, is ideal for beginners and families with small children. It’s a place without mass tourism, but not far from the major ski centres of the Upper Engadin.
The catering building designed for the ski lift in Maloja-Orden was conceived as a solitary building made of prefabricated wooden elements.
The organic and irregular geometric building form was derived from a Swiss pine cone; the Swiss pine is one of the tree species typical of the Alps. The building envelope was to be completely clad with split larch wood shingles to ensure harmonious integration into the alpine landscape. The new building was planned as a replacement for the temporary construction containers erected in winter. Unfortunately, this project was rejected in the Bergell municipal assembly due to a single dissenting vote.
