After 2015, 2018 and 2020, we have received a special recognition for our stone houses for the fourth time. This year, the award went to the stone house in La Mota Maloja which was completed last year. The award ceremony took place on 19 June 2020 in Nuremberg. This prize recognises pioneering architectural and urban development concepts for sustainable building whose quality is characterised by the design and construction uses of natural stone.
Jury assessment:
The construction of a residential building is one of the most beautiful tasks an architect can undertake. In Maloja on the Maloja Pass, at an altitude of 1811 metres on the border with Italian-speaking Switzerland, Renato Maurizio Architects have designed a house that develops its formal and material language entirely from the location. The jury recognised the house as living proof that the regional approach is still capable of producing new, beautiful and durable solutions. Sometimes it is a single detail that defines an architecture and at the same time captivates the viewer. In the case of the stone house in Maloja, it is the double-shell design of a quarry stone masonry made of Bergell granite. The quarry stones are only roughly shaped and then bricked up in the traditional way with a light-coloured lime mortar. Finally, the surface is smoothed and standardised in the manner of a slurry. The result is a lively yet homogeneous texture that gives the building a very attractive appearance.
